The most worrisome thing about the widespread air-conditioning outage at Los Angeles International Airport on Monday wasn't that it inconvenienced travelers on a record-hot day. It's that a single squirrel could do so much damage without even trying.
LAX is the world's fifth-busiest airport, with about 60 million passengers passing through last year. And for as long as a few hours, some terminals were left without air conditioning - all because a squirrel came into contact with a Department of Water and Power distribution transformer.
Clearly it's time to start screening the critters more carefully - full-body X-rays, shoe removal, the works.
Because if, in this age of heightened security, a rodent can wreak havoc at a major airport, well, that's just nuts
